for Grandparents
As a grandparent, have you ever wondered what activities in the area are suitable for you and your grandchildren? The information below is based on the "experiences" of our community members. Activities reflected here range from entertainment to suitable hikes.
In addition, once a year in July, volunteers from the community (like grandparents!) conduct a private cam, Kids' Camp, which is open to the grandchildren/family members of Glassy Residents. You can find more information by clicking here: Kids' Camp. Each year, as the timeframe for Kids' Camp approaches, expect to see news articles in The Glassy News on the home page.

McKinney Falls
Located inside the McKinney Falls section of Falls North, is a beautiful waterfall and a moderate 3-mile loop walking trail. These falls can be enjoyed year-round and even offer a shallow flat pool area at the top of the falls for wading on hot summer days. From Old Chapman Bridge Road, enter at the McKinney Falls Parkway gate and drive approximately .9 mile to the McKinney Falls trail marker. Turn right onto the gravel road and follow it to an open field area. Look for a marker directing you to either the Upper or Lower Falls, as the waterfall can be viewed from both the top and the bottom.
McKinney Falls is also accessible by boat. It is an easy kayak excursion from the Vineyards or other Falls North locations to the Falls East marina. Park your boat(s) and then walk the easy 1/2 mile trail to the waterfall.
In addition to the waterfall, visitors can enjoy a moderate 3-mile walking trail alongside McKinney Creek. The trail is a loop which includes markers to guide hikers. It can be accessed from either side of McKinney Falls Parkway and continues on both sides of the road.
Twin Falls
An easy 10 minute hike that ends at a gazebo with a great view of the falls. The path parallels the river with places where one can splash. Twin Falls is about a 10 minute drive from the Vineyards Main Gate
See "Beyond the Gates", ...Waterfalls for details
Whitewater Falls
The upper Whitewater Falls is about 1/4 mile from the parking area. If you are coming from SC, HWY 11, turn north on SC130 and drive to the NC border. The parking area is just ahead on the right. There is a fee of $2 per vehicle for up to 7 persons, $1 for each additional person. The walk to the top viewing area is less than 1/4 mile and is on sloped paved path. It's kid friendly. The first observation area gives a pretty food view of the falls, but for a better view you'll need to take the stairs (approximately 155-160 stairs) down. See "Beyond the Gates", ...Waterfalls for details
Cliffs Falls South Trail to Waterfall
An easy hike, about 2.5 miles in and back. The trail ends at a picnic area, which is also accessible by car from a gravel road. See Trail maps here, open Hiking bar.
